The Virginia Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Pediatrics are strongly recommending the HPV vaccine for rising sixth graders. Norman Oliver, the Virginia State Health Commissioner, explains more about this vaccine here.

All 7th grade students are required to have a tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) booster shot prior to the beginning of the school year. Shots may be obtained from your private doctor, local military clinics, or Portsmouth Health Department (free) at 383-8585. Be sure that you take a copy of your child’s immunization record with you. Regardless of where your child receives their shot, documentation must be taken to their school nurse as soon as possible to ensure that they may begin classes in the first day of school. More information about the tDap booster shot can be read here.
